Fall is coming on and the weather is cooling off. We’ve been getting the potatoes out of the garden and still pushing ahead on the house build, trying to get as much done as we can before winter hits.
Grass, and lots of it
Most of the cattle are doing really well with all the rain. We have some amazing forage and still lots of grass, which is a huge help going into fall.
We planted one field of oats later on in the season. With all the rain, it’s almost over the cows’ backs in places. It’s amazingly lush and still so green!
Below is our bale yard, with a bunch of the green feed and hay for feeding our cows this winter. Ready to go.
I was out in the field today looking for molehills to trap. They’re easier to find in the fall. And I came across this puffball mushroom. I’ve almost never seen one of these, and never at this size. It was basically as big as my foot. A puffball is a completely solid round ball, with an inside that’s solid mushroom all the way through.
Over a hundred chickens
Over the middle of the summer we butchered more than a hundred free-range chickens, spread over a couple of different days. We bought them as chicks and raised them by hand out on grass all summer.
The feedback from customers so far has been amazing. People are loving them, and we’re always glad to hear that.

Beef is back in November
We have three butcher slots booked for November. That should have us restocked on at least hamburger by the end of November or the beginning of December. We’re basically sold out of it right now, unfortunately.
Individual cuts will likely be in limited supply for a while yet. We’re planning to keep hamburger and a few things like that available, and we’ll see what happens going into the next butcher season. The hope is that by next fall we have things set up to carry more of the individual cuts again.
For those asking about quarters and bulk beef: the November dates cover them, but most of what’s coming has already been spoken for by pre-orders. There’s a chance we add one more animal to the schedule. We won’t know until after we preg check the herd in October. If that changes, the people on our email list will hear first.
Pork is coming to the website
One more thing. We have some pork products in the freezer that we just haven’t gotten around to listing on the website. Most of it is pork our boys hand raised out on grass right here. It’s an amazing product. We’ve had it for a bit, and we’re hoping to get it listed later this fall or in the new year.
