Pre-Order: Pasture-Raised Chicken

Where things stand right now (August 2026): we’re in the middle of butchering this year’s flock. Pre-orders for this season are filled.

We may have a few extra birds available once every pre-order is taken care of. If you’d like one, email us and we’ll let you know what’s left.

Want to be on the list for next season? Read on, then send us a note.

Thank you for considering chickens raised right here on our small family farm in Saskatchewan. Like our beef, these birds are raised using holistic methods: no antibiotics, no hormones, no steroids. Moved regularly to fresh pasture for natural foraging, handled with low stress, and fed non-GMO, unsprayed feed as much as possible, to support both their health and the land’s health.

We plan each year’s flock based on real commitments from families like yours. By pre-committing, you help us decide exactly how many chicks to order and raise. No guesswork, less waste, and birds that go only to people who value them.

Key details you should know up front

  • Birds are ready for processing in late summer.
  • We aim for whole roasting chickens around 4–6 lb dressed weight (typical for pasture-raised broilers; exact size varies with breed, forage and weather).
  • Processing happens as humanely and cleanly as possible. We handle as much as we can ourselves or with trusted help.
  • Butchering help option: if you’re able and willing to assist with processing (scalding, plucking, eviscerating or packaging on the day), it keeps costs down for everyone and lets you see firsthand how the birds are treated from field to freezer. Many folks find it rewarding and educational. Let us know if you’d like to take part and we’ll follow up with available dates.
  • If you’d rather not help: there’s an added fee of $7.50 per bird to help cover butchering labour. This is standard for small farms. Industrial chicken gets subsidies and scale we don’t have.
  • Price per bird is finalized each year once feed and chick costs are locked in, but committing early reserves your spot and estimated quantity. Price should land between $4.50–$5.50 per lb dressed.
  • All birds are bagged and frozen unless fresh pickup is arranged (limited spots).
  • Pickup and delivery options are in Saskatoon and area, just like our beef.

This is a true pre-commitment, not a firm purchase yet. We’ll confirm totals, pricing and final details with you before any payment or chick orders go forward. If plans change significantly (weather, feed costs, flock health), we’ll communicate openly and work with you.

Interested?

Email us at sales@purevalleyfarms.ca with the number of birds you’re interested in and whether you’d like to help with processing. The more clear commitments we get, the better we can plan a healthy, happy flock that nourishes our community. We’re a family farm. Real conversations matter.
